"How Are You Really Doing?" — The Check-in That Makes Leadership Felt

Healthy leadership begins with awareness: the "How are you really doing?" check-in is a documentable leadership tool within the Healthy Leadership BGM action area – two minutes that surface psychological strain early.

Why the routine question is worse than none at all When the question "How's it going?" has become a hollow phrase, no one listens to the answer anymore. A structured check-in, by contrast, creates a space where the answer actually matters: each person states in one sentence how they're really doing right now — honestly, without comment, without judgment. In an 8-person meeting, this costs two minutes and changes the culture of conversation for good.

What managers gain from it A manager who regularly knows the team's true state leads differently — more proactively, more concretely, less prone to missing the real issue. An employee who is exhausted won't state that officially under pressure. But in the check-in, it often surfaces before it becomes critical. An early-warning system without bureaucracy.

How to keep it from becoming an empty ritual The check-in loses its meaning once it becomes an obligation everyone answers with "fine, thanks." What keeps it alive: the manager answering honestly themselves, and no answer being commented on or judged. Those allowed to say "pass" stay engaged voluntarily. Those allowed to answer honestly actually use it.
